Introducing Lola

We have a new family member… introducing Lola!

Lola is a 4-month old Chihuahua/Yorkshire Terrier mix (a Chorkie!), weighing just 5 pounds, who we adopted from Texas Sweeties Dog Rescue. She’s been with us for about a week and a half now and we are totally smitten.

We’ve been wanting a second dog again ever since we moved last summer (and it’s been over a year and a half since Rocky died), but we’ve been scouring websites, rescues, shelters, and Craigslist looking for just the right dog. Initially we were looking for another Labradoodle. Charlie is the best dog ever and I wanted another doodle, just smaller. About a month ago, Anna got to hold a Chihuahua and she fell in love. So we adjusted our search.

I had never considered a tiny breed before. We’ve always had big dogs and I used to joke that little dogs weren’t even “real” dogs. I mean seriously… look at those ears! Lola is a mixture of a Chihuahua (those bat ears are a dead giveaway, huh?) and Yorkshire Terrier (which you can see in her fur). She doesn’t shed at all which is really nice.

Anna picked out her first collar. I have to admit, it’s pretty fun being able to get cute accessories for her. We have a crate, a pen, a travel carrier, a purse, a sweater, leashes, toys… you name it, we got it!

Lola has so many cute expressions, she is alert and proud when trotting around… then she lays those ears down and looks super tiny and vulnerable when laying in your arms. She is already learning sit, stay, and wait… but the house breaking is only going so-so. She’ll get there. The nice thing is that she’s so tiny, her messes are very small and easy to clean up.

When Anna’s at school, Lola follows me around. After I shower and I’m getting ready in the morning, she likes to lay in the patch of sun that comes through the French doors in my bathroom.

Anytime I sit down for a few minutes during the day, Lola jumps into my lap for a cuddle and snooze.

Right from the first night, we’ve had Lola sleep with Anna. Anna loves having a sleep buddy and Lola has taken to burrowing under the covers and sleeping right next to her all night.

In the morning, Lola helps Anna wait for the bus. Here they are in the garage. Anna’s confidence is increasing every day… already she doesn’t need any help in picking up Lola.

While Anna is at school, Charlie and Lola play and snuggle. It’s so cute to see this tiny 5-pound puppy asleep on top of my 50-pound doodle! (And a special thanks to Cassie who suggested Lola as a name… it’s perfect!)

After school, Dominic gets home first and is greeted with whole body puppy wags, kisses, and wiggles. We are all falling for her!

When I’m running errands, Charlie and Lola head to Curtis’s office and nap on the loveseat in there. Curtis took this shot of them together with his Galaxy phone.

Here are a couple of short video clips of Charlie and Lola playing together. Charlie has been so very gentle with her. He seems to understand how tiny she is and knows just the right way to play. He is the most balanced dog I’ve ever known!

We are feeling so blessed to be able to welcome Lola into our family! I want to give a special thank you to Jill, Lola’s foster mom… she took great care of Lola (then named Bonnie) until she was old enough to be adopted. Lola has a little brother that has yet to be adopted… he’s even smaller than his sister. If you are in Central Texas, take a look at Clyde’s profile to see if he might be a good fit for your family!

Texas Sweeties Dog Rescue is a wonderful rescue organization that operates on donations and through foster placement, saving vulnerable dogs from shelters. If you own a dog and are a dog walker, there is an app you can download to your phone that’s called WalkForADog. Anytime you walk your dog, you can specify a shelter or rescue to receive a donation. You can even walk for a shelter if you don’t have a dog! If you don’t want to walk for Texas Sweeties Dog Rescue, you can specify any local area shelter or rescue close to you. Thanks for making a difference for our special companions!!!
