Day 197, Friday, July 16th, 2021

White Crepe Myrtle

I’ve been trying to get a good photo of our gorgeous crepe myrtle trees all summer but they are surprisingly hard to photograph! Especially if there is any wind at all. I like the ethereal quality of these white crepe myrtle blooms. My favorite part are the curly tendrils around the seeds.

Pink Crepe Myrtle

Almost as pretty as the white crepe myrtle blooms are the pink blossoms. The yellow pollen really stands out against the pink. This particular tree is shedding its pink petals all over our driveway. When the garage door is open, our garage floor is covered in a carpet of pink.

Toadstool Treasure

I was outside feeding the deer and decided to clean out the water trough and fill it up for them. While I was doing so, this young doe came very close and nuzzled something on the ground. It was a bright red toadstool! She was quite delighted with her find and went to work getting the other toadstool at the base of the tree.

Instapot Chicken

While my sister Pam was here a couple of weeks ago, she sold us on getting an Instapot to make moonshine. I decided to put it to use to cook some meals too. I found a recipe for cooking a whole chicken and this was my first attempt. The meat was so tender it literally fell off the bone! Curtis said it was pretty good and I’ll have to take his word for it since I am a vegetarian. My next meal will be a pot roast. I just made salted caramel moonshine and it turned out great (see below!).

Day 200, Monday, July 19th, 2021

Time for a Med Adjustment

Through no fault of her own, or anyone else’s, Anna has gotten quite stuck on her beloved Great Uncle Bill. Though her OCD sometimes has rough patches, this one took a turn into unhealthy. She did so well with her cousins’ visit that she earned a day trip with Daddy to see Uncle Bill working at the radio station in Mexia last Saturday. That was an overdose of virtual heroin to her OCD and she came down off that trip in a rough way. We took away all of her screens, going cold turkey with no calls or texts to anyone. Anna had several violent meltdowns over the weekend which led to her glasses being thrown. Thankfully they didn’t break this time and just needed an adjustment at Visionworks. They are always so nice there. After consulting with her psychiatrist, we upped one of her meds. It took a few more days of no contact and med changes to get our girl back. She is working so hard to control her brain storms. I am proud of her progress.

Day 201, Tuesday, July 20th, 2021

Salted Caramel Moonshine

After a few days of rough behavior (including having to meet Andrea, Anna’s caregiver, at the front of the neighborhood because Anna was melting down in her car), I needed some extra deliciousness in my alcohol consumption this week. I found a highly rated salted caramel moonshine recipe that called for Everclear and Salted Caramel vodka. Yes please! I doubled the recipe but it still didn’t make much so if you want to try this, quadruple the recipe (get 2 bottles of Everclear though!). It is the most delicious (and STRONG!) thing I’ve ever had to drink. Yummmmm.

Zen for my Soul

4 days in a row of hard behavior requiring 100% supervision of Anna, I took advantage of Andrea’s presence on Wednesday to wander in my backyard with my camera. It wasn’t long before I discovered this butterfly on one of our bushes. I asked him out loud if I could please take his picture and I meant him no harm. He opened his wings and got super still. I approached slowly, snapping away, different angles, below, above, straight on. This image is a composite of 4 snaps (but I still missed focus a bit on the left) to get most of him in focus. Thank you, dear butterfly… you truly are zen for my soul.

Day 203, Thursday, July 22nd, 2021

Haircut with Heather

Anna was supposed to get a haircut with Heather on Monday but we rescheduled due to meltdowns. Thankfully the med adjustment and the long break with no contact seemed to be helping Anna control her brain storms. We went to Heather’s for a quick haircut and Anna managed the washing, cutting, and drying with perfect behavior. I did allow her to talk about Uncle Bill so that made her happy. Her hair looks so cute now, I’ll share a picture of it in next week’s blog.

Last Day of PT

Insurance only allowed so many physical therapy sessions before saying that’s enough, so this was Anna’s last PT with Dr. Katie. I can see such a difference in Anna’s strength and stamina. She brought Isabelle, her silicone doll, to show everyone. This clinic, Texas Physical Therapy Specialists, are the most wonderful, caring, competent group of people we’ve ever met. We love them and will miss them.

Day 190, Friday, July 9th, 2021

Cuddling with the Cousins

As Anna got to know her cousins more, she became less and less anxious and was able to interact more and more each day. Both Isaac and Caitlyn enjoyed sitting with her on the couch and watching cartoons, as well as coloring and playing baby dolls. Curtis and I were so proud of her! Daddy even said if she could try hard all week to engage that he would take her to Mexia to see Uncle Bill for a day trip. That was some great motivation! Look how well she did!

Day 191, Saturday, July 10th, 2021

All the Peeps

Friday evening, Lisa and Pam picked up Gabe from his summer camp and on Saturday, Jenny came down from Georgetown. We swam all afternoon, then did some group photos, then Dominic made everyone steaks. What an amazing, loving, remarkable day! One highlight was getting to do Lisa’s hair with my Dyson AirWrap. She french-braided my hair earlier in the week and it was such a sweet sister moment to return the favor… I had always wanted a sister with whom to play hair. <3

What a treat to get all of our children together in the same space at the same time. This was the first and hopefully not last time!

The Sisters

It had been 28 years since the three of us were together. There were tears, there was shared pain, shared joy, healing, and laughter. I learned that at various times, each sister felt like she didn’t belong and that we all longed to know each other better. Both of my sisters have experienced so much pain in their lives, I wish I had been there for them. There is a renewed sense of connection and a promise to never let anything tear us apart again.

The Renshaws

The Renshaw family is so sweet, braving their souls to share emotions, and taking chances to grow more love in their lives. I love reading to the kids and having their weight in my lap. I got a little teary-eyed when I begged off reading due to fatigue and they both said, “Sure, Aunt Holly!” Andy is so smart and a super interesting guy. Did you know he’s a published author?

(Side note: Gabe didn’t want to take a photo without his dad, Gregg, to be there by his side with Pam so we honored that request. I do wish I had gotten a shot with just him and I. <3)

The Beetle and the Bird Poop

So we go from “awww” to “ewwww”… that’s what I do! Lisa and Andy had just left with the kids to head home and I was outside on the back patio. That’s when I noticed this large beetle having a disgusting snack. Of course, like I always do, I asked the beetle for permission to take a picture, then got to work. So so gross, right? You can even see some seeds in the bird poop. Barf!

Boys Play Pool

I needed a couple of days to decompress after Pam and Gabe left early Monday morning. Man, I love those two people so much already. Pam and I have so many similarities that it’s like I found a part of myself I didn’t know was missing. Dominic was feeling a little lonesome for his friends, so we invited Cole and Gavin to come over Wednesday through Friday. They were sweet enough to let me take some photos. Though the title is a bit of a misnomer… Dominic and I played a game of 9-ball while Cole and Gavin watched.

Green Lynx Spider

Thursday was a nice day outside so I went out to wander in the backyard with my camera. Everything is blooming. I found this small, semi-transparent green lynx spider on the rose bush. Unfortunately, his body was in shadow and his limbs were in the sun. I had to do a bit of dodging and burning to get his face to show at all but I did manage to capture some cool details on him.

A week late but better late than never!

Day 183, Friday, July 2nd, 2021

Cleaning Out the Deck Box

I have sisters!  My stepsister and half sister were raised by my father and we’ve only had a superficial relationship up until now. Pam’s son, Gabe, was attending a summer camp nearby so they planned a visit. Lisa and her family could come too so we decided to have a mini family reunion and all spend time together with our kids.

In preparation for my sisters’ upcoming visit, the kids help me clean up outside. Dominic tackled our old deck box which was full of old pool noodles and yucky toys. He was a brave soul and even disposed of a dead frog. He then power washed out the inside. Thanks, Dominic!

Day 184, Saturday, July 3rd, 2021

Pam is Here!

Oh my gosh, you guys! My sister, Pam, and my nephew, Gabe arrived from New Mexico. They are both a bit camera shy so I didn’t get many photos of them (I did get a fantastic family photo on Saturday, July 10th, for next week’s blog post!).

Meeting Gabe (14) was really easy, he reminds me a lot of Dominic. He’s soft spoken, easy to talk to, maybe a little shy, loves video games, and has a calm energy. All the dogs loved him. I hope to get to spend more time with him soon. He seemed to like hanging out with the grown-ups and the kids equally.

I loved how easily Pam integrated into our family, it felt like she’s always been here. Anna and Pam hit it off right away and so did we. Pam and I have so many little things in common, it was a little spooky and really cool at the same time.

Day 185, Sunday, July 4th, 2021

Meeting Caitlyn

Pam and I drove Gabe out to his summer camp earlier Sunday afternoon. We had a nice quiet evening with Curtis and Anna. Dominic stayed in his room most of the week.

Lisa, my other sister, drove in from Florida on the 4th with her husband, Andy, and their 2 kids… Caitlyn (8) and Isaac (5). They didn’t arrive until after 9 pm and as soon as Lisa arrived, I showed them around and told her to take her time unpacking and nesting. That’s what I like to do when I travel. She does too and was tickled that I understood. She got her kids showered and they came downstairs to hang out a little.

Caitlyn has the sweetest energy, she’s happy, patient, quiet, and loving. She was immediately comfortable with all of us. She even let me snap a picture right away!

Late Night Snack

Though it was close to midnight, I thought the kids might want a little snack so I offered them some watermelon. They both hopped up on the bar stools and chatted with me while they ate. Anna had quite a bit of anxiety about meeting her cousins. As most of you know, she loves baby dolls but is scared of babies and kids. They are unpredictable and can be loud. She was scared someone would cry or have a meltdown. So it was good that she was already asleep when they arrived. The kids met Anna the next morning; they immediately hit it off and played baby dolls.

Coloring with Lisa and Issac

Monday was a super chill day. The kids swam and later in the afternoon, we pulled out some coloring books and colored at the table. Lisa started a page of sliced fruit on the trip over and I worked on a Joanna Basford’s Christmas page. Isaac really enjoys playing with his sister and seemed happy to do whatever everyone else wanted to do. He has a little more of a high energy vibe but nothing like Dominic was at that age. Isaac strikes me as an old soul, fairly easy-going, also very sweet and loving, like Caitlyn. I like that Lisa encourages him to play baby dolls and also encourages Caitlyn to be a tomboy. They are well rounded kids. We had a spaghetti dinner to celebrate Lisa’s and Andy’s anniversary of their first date. Andy is just as nice and sweet as his kids!!! It was a great first day.

Issac Picks His Sushi

We tried to take Pam to A-Tan Sushi on Sunday but they were closed for the 4th of July. No problem, we went back on Tuesday and took everyone with us (except Mom and Gabe). Isaac loves sushi and was studying the menu to go over his meal options. Anna was pretty nervous, she hasn’t wanted to sit down and eat in a restaurant for a long time now. We let her bring her headphones and phone to listen to music and we seated her with her back to the restaurant and on the end of the table. Isaac was very well-behaved (as was Caitlyn) and we had no issues and no meltdowns.

Ready to Make Ice Cream

I pretty much let the kids do almost everything in making the ice cream. Caitlyn helped read the recipe and she took turns with Isaac pouring in the ingredients, using the hand mixer, and getting the oreos prepped (we blended 2 cups of oreos with the center filling taken out then hand chopped up a few more to mix in after the ice cream was done). Once the ice cream had frozen, I scooped it out into the container to go into the freezer. That freezer bowl gets so cold, I didn’t want one of them getting burned. The ice cream turned out delicious! We had it after dinner that night.

Ball

Anna had physical therapy with Dr. Katie and I crept back to snap a couple of pictures. This is one of Anna’s favorite games when they bounce the giant exercise ball back and forth. She took Zachary, her newborn reborn, with her to PT… can you see him laying next to her?

Look at Anna’s face! See her crinkly nose under the mask? She was laughing so hard bouncing the ball back to Dr. Katie. She was bouncing it too hard on purpose to make Dr. Katie chase it all over the place. Anna has only one visit left that insurance will cover so this was her next to the last session.

Dominic Teaches Issac

When we got back from PT, the kids wanted to swim. Pam told us about making moonshine in an InstaPot, so Curtis ordered one and got supplies. Pam whipped up a batch of lemonade moonshine and it was ready for sipping Thursday afternoon. Dominic got in the pool with Caitlyn and Isaac while the grown-ups sat around and chatted. It was lovely. It was also nice to see Dominic spending some time with his cousins. He’s a natural teacher just like his dad. He taught Isaac how to swim off the back of the float and taught both Isaac and Caitlyn how to cannonball.

Aunt Holly, Watch Me!

Caitlyn and Isaac loved learning how to cannonball and then used the ledge off the inside of the pool to do it over and over. I heard, “Aunt Holly, watch me!” a dozen times! Lisa and I reminisced about Nanny and Grandpa’s pool at the condo when we were kids, yelling the same thing over and over. Watch me, watch me!

So Happy to Be Home

We got home about 11 pm Thursday night and the dogs were besides themselves with joy at our arrival. I missed Lola a bunch this trip and I don’t normally miss the pets. I know mom missed Teddy so much that it almost physically pained her. Friday was a flurry of activity… unpacking, laundry, taking Anna to the doc for a UTI, returning my rental lens… and when I finally plopped down on the couch Friday night, I was exhausted. We put something mindless on TV then I remembered that I hadn’t taken a photo today and Stuart looked so cute in the chair that he became my subject. You should’ve seen how surreptitiously I crept off the couch to get my camera. I didn’t want to disturb him. Stuart had pulled the blanket off the back of the chair and made a nest with it on the chair cushion. Lola is just behind him. So precious.

Night Swim with the Glowing Balloons

It had been so nice to get away and cut loose and be real grown-ups last week that we weren’t quite ready to get back to our regular routine. So we invited friends to come over Saturday night to swim, drink, and play cards. We heated the pool (didn’t need much to warm it up!) and hopped in just after sunset. Aaaahhhh… the water felt great! Those balloons are solar-charged LED floating lanterns that my mom got Curtis for Father’s Day 2020. They change color automatically and add a lot of light to the pool at night. Followed by a couple of adult beverages and some cutthroat canasta, it was a very fun evening.

Pretty Plumbago

This is such a pretty perennial plant, the plumbago. We thought this particular bush had died forever with the great Snowpocalypse 2021 but it survived and is blooming like crazy right now. The color is a purplish blue and the petals are thin and delicate. It’s always been one of my favorite things to photograph, I remember snapping photos of our neighbor’s plant in Austin. I like this composition with the sun setting in the background and the tiny unfurled blossoms ready to burst poking up amongst the blooms. Makes me happy.

Waiting on Dr. Arnold

We love Dr. Arnold… our family’s gastroenterologist. He has now seen all 5 of us in his office. (My claim to fame? I have the colon the size of Tim Duncan!) Dominic had his follow up with him after getting a bazillion tests run. All the testing came back normal so he was diagnosed with IBS. Dr. Arnold said it was common in people with ADD and ADHD. Dominic’s been tracking what foods upset his stomach but it looks like he inherited his dad’s genes for tummy troubles. Sorry kid!

Anna Tells a Secret

Anna loves telling news to everyone and every day she makes the rounds calling relatives to share the latest. Today she had a juicy tidbit that she was forbidden to tell anyone. I found her at Nana’s this afternoon and asked her if she had shared it and she hadn’t. Yay! Then she asked me so so nicely if she could tell only Nana. I said okay. I love how she leans way in to whisper the secret and how you can see her shadow reflection on the glass behind them.

The Big Reveal

For the first time in nearly 30 years of parenting, Curtis and I were walked in on… ahem… you know. Anna was like, “Oh my God, what did I just see???” LOL!!! I made her promise not to tell anyone because it was private (and for what it’s worth, she was at my mom’s house and our door was closed… she didn’t knock). She did good and did not talk about it all day, even to her caregiver, Andrea. Her boundaries aren’t good so I was worried. Anyway, this was her reaction getting to tell her Nana… and Nana’s reaction too which is priceless even if it’s out of focus.

365 in 52 [2021] ~ Week Twenty-Five

Because I have so many photos to edit from our vacation to Key West, I chose one from each day to get started so I don’t get too far behind.

Day 169, Friday, June 18th, 2021

Waiting Waiting Waiting

It’s time for vacation! Curtis had made us each gift bags with matching masks, hand sanitizer, candy, gum, and gift cards. Mom also got a tiara but she forgot it at home. That was so sweet of him! The girls got fancy Vera Bradley masks, we felt so pretty. We were all ready on time Friday morning and we left the house around 11:20 to pick up Cole. Because we had 6 people with lots of suitcases, we took 2 cars to the airport in San Antonio. The boys picked up Cole then Curtis dropped them at the curb, and I dropped the girls and the luggage at the curb too. Curtis and I then parked in long term and took the shuttle back. We all then headed to the priority line at American to check the bags.

Snafu #1. We had no plane. They were trying to find a replacement plane because ours had mechanical problems. They tried to get us on another flight to DFW but there weren’t enough seats. It was about 1:00 at this point. Our flight was supposed to leave at 2:30. They said we would most likely get another plane in time to make it to Dallas for our next flight at 6:45. Curtis thought we should hop back in the cars and drive to Dallas. But I didn’t want to have to drive back from Dallas. So we waited. And waited. And waited. Anna played with Sophia, her baby doll, and mom played on her iPad. I took pictures. Curtis played on his phone and the boys played on their Switches.

They did eventually find us another plane and said it would be leaving from Dallas to come to San Antonio. We kept watching our app to see when it took off, but it was delayed because there was bad weather in Dallas. Finally it arrived and they loaded us on after 5:30. We knew our connection was screwed and had already resigned ourselves to spending the night in Dallas. We arrived at 6:38 and our connection was leaving at 6:45. There were 2 other families on our plane also going to Key West so we had a glimmer of hope that they might wait. We had to change terminals so we told the others if they beat us to the gate to let them know about our family of 6.

Y’all should’ve seen Anna!!! She hauled ass and RAN all the way to the tram with the boys. They tried to hold the tram for me and mom but we just missed it. About 2 stops away, Curtis calls me and says the gate agent called him to find out how close we were because the pilot was holding the plane for us. WHAT?!?!?!? Crazy, right? That never happens!

So we actually made it to Key West and I hugged the pilot. Of course our luggage didn’t make the connection but we didn’t care at that point. That was Snafu #2 to be dealt with tomorrow. We got a taxi, headed to the condo, ordered a pizza, then collapsed.

View From our Condo

We woke up in good spirits on Saturday having all slept fairly well. Curtis then started trying to figure out where our luggage was. I went out on the deck to take some photos. Mom and Dominic went on a short walk to a market that was close by to pick up a few groceries. I had already created Winn-Dixie and Shipt accounts so I could order food for the condo so I went ahead and scheduled that for later in the afternoon. Curtis and I decided to go explore around lunchtime and ended up at the Sunset Pier for a drink. We then wandered over to CVS to get a few basic toiletries because we all wanted to brush our teeth and put on some deodorant. The humidity made the heat nearly unbearable. Curtis and I were both dripping sweat and soaked to the bone by the time we got back to the condo (as were mom and Dominic earlier that morning). Curtis got on the AA app and figured out that 5 of our 7 pieces of luggage should be arriving on a 5:45 flight that afternoon but we were hoping all 7 of when would be there. We were all stinky! So the boys went to the airport via taxi to wait for luggage.

I decided to load the dishwasher before groceries arrived to discover Snafu #3. The dishwasher was broken, it was full of very disgusting dirty water. I turned it on to run it but nothing happened… I tried to cancel it and nothing happened. Ewww. So began the sojourn of hand washing dishes on vacation. Words that should NEVER go together in a sentence.

The boys went to the airport via taxi to wait for luggage. Not too much later, they were heading back with 5 pieces of luggage. Once they were back, we discovered that mom’s and Anna’s suitcases were missing. That was unfortunate because they are about the same size and could wear each others clothes. I then dug around in Curtis‘s workout clothes to find mom and Anna some shirts and shorts to wear until their luggage arrived. Mom was still tired from traveling so the girls ordered food in for dinner from OnlyWood and the rest of us showered and went out. Mom said she would wash all the dirty clothes so she and Anna would have something to wear on Sunday. That’s when we found Snafu #4, the washing machine was broken too. I fired off a second email to the realty management company. The boys and I had an amazing dinner experience at Bagatelle and met the nicest waiter named Justin. We then found a candy shop called It’s Sugar where Dominic bought the biggest gummy worm in the world!

Rhett Likes the Hat

Sunday morning, I loaded up a backpack full of wet clothes and a basket of dirty clothes to go out in search of a laundromat. Yes, you read that right! I had found one about 3/4 mile away that had a drop off service. Perfect. Curtis and I walked past a golf cart rental place and decided that because of the heat, it would be a good idea to have one. We could only get a 4-seater but I was VERY grateful to have it because when we got to the laundromat, the drop off service was closed on Sundays. Sigh. So we hauled everything back to the condo. Curtis then got a call that one of the pieces of luggage had arrived at the airport so he and Anna headed over to get it. They had to wait a very long time but eventually brought Anna’s luggage back with them. Now at least mom could wear something of Anna’s. I called the after hours emergency number about the washing machine and our lost luggage and they sent someone over from housekeeping to get our laundry. They said they could get it back to us the next day. That was nice.

Our only planned excursion for all 6 of us was a trip to the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory with a Flamingle Experience Sunday afternoon. After the center closes, they allow just 6 people to stay and meet their resident flamingoes, Rhett and Scarlett. This was scheduled for 4:30 Sunday afternoon and we all managed to shower and have clean clothes on, woohoo! Because we could only fit 4 of us on the golf cart, the boys took that and the girls took an air conditioned taxi. The Flamingle Experience was really really cool. They are much taller than I realized and so curious. Scarlett took a liking to mom. Rhett took a liking to Dominic. Our guide, Clarissa, was so informative and engaged. She’s been working there for years and has really bonded to these flamingoes. We all got tons of cool photos and videos and Clarissa took a bunch too which she air dropped to us before we left. I loved this photo of Rhett grabbing hold of Dominic’s hat. D’s expression is hilarious!

After the Butterfly museum, Curtis and Dominic went back to the airport for the third time (3RD) to get the last missing piece of luggage while the rest of us went back to the condo. They got mom’s suitcase, came back, we ordered some dinner for everyone from the Old Town Mexican Cafe, then Curtis and I went out to Mallory Square to watch the sunset. We then went out to a late dinner just the two of us at One Duval but we both felt overdone, too hot, and a little sick (I think we were dehydrated) so we called it an early night and were in bed by 10.

Day 172, Monday, June 21st, 2021

Irish Kevin’s

Monday dawned with a sense of finally our vacation was starting. Everyone had their luggage, the realty company was sending someone to fix the dishwasher on Tuesday and replace the washing machine on Wednesday. Our laundry had been done and returned. They also gave us a hefty refund almost equivalent to a full day’s rental charge. Anna, Curtis, and I went out for breakfast intending to try Blue Heaven which was highly recommended. But it had a 45-minute wait so we ate down the street at Rams Head Southernmost. We had naps in the afternoon, sent the boys out to CVS for some essentials, then we left Dominic to nap while we hit up some art galleries. We met Alan Maltz, owner of a gorgeous photography gallery. He gifted Anna a postcard, so sweet! The girls got overheated fairly quickly so we stopped at the Old Town Tavern for a drink then ordered them a taxi. They got back and ordered dinner to be delivered to the condo (again from OnlyWood, they really liked their food!) while Curtis and I went out to eat. We had a delicious meal at Caroline’s Cafe then walked up Duval to Mallory Square. We booked a parasailing adventure for the following afternoon with Fury Adventures. We people watched then walked back down to Duval ending up at Irish Kevin’s. OMG this guy was a hoot, the performer was Paul Mandell, aka NY Pauly! Anytime someone new walks in, he asks where you’re from then the whole bar yells, “No shit?” He divided the bar into Side A and Side B and we dueled each other singing. It was a blast. We stayed there for about an hour then wandered down to Sloppy Joe’s where a great 90s cover band called Hollow Decks was performing. We got a primo spot and stayed there for a couple of hours. We watched a creepy old guy hitting on a cute young couple and saw the 40th birthday crew from Irish Kevin’s arrive and dance. It was a fun night.

So Far Away

Tuesday morning was the boys’ fishing expedition with Salty Goat Fishing Charters. They were long gone by the time I got up so I wandered out and got brunch for me and the girls from Big Boy Burrito. The boys were back by about 2:30 that afternoon. Dominic was the only one not to catch anything. Poor guy! Even in all the years of being in Boy Scouts, he has yet to catch a fish. Cole and Curtis each caught 2 and Cole ended up sunburned. I think they had an okay time but the boat was too crowded and the lines kept getting tangled. Curtis had a short siesta while Anna and I wandered the shops at Mallory Square. Then he and I got ready for our parasailing adventure. I was so excited and a little nervous to try this! I’m not an adventurous person but watching the videos of parasailing, it looked very peaceful. We only had one other couple on our boat and I took a few photos and video with my phone. This was the only day I didn’t take my big camera with me anywhere. Curtis video-ed the whole experience on his Father’s Day gift, his new GoPro. This photo is of me and Curtis way far away, with the rope all the way extended. We were way up there! I wasn’t scared at all and felt like a little girl, I was so excited. I remarked to Curtis that human beings had not evolved to occupy this space in the sky so getting to be there felt extra special. It was amazing and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

We went back to the condo and again tried to go out to eat but no one else wanted to go with us. So they ordered in and we went out. I really wanted to book a sunset cruise for the following evening for all 6 of us. I thought being on the water would be cooler and found a catamaran snorkeling cruise. The boys could snorkel, the girls could sit in the shade or go wading in the 2-5’ water along the sandbars and watch the sun set. But texting this idea back to mom, Anna freaked out and had a meltdown in front of Dominic and Cole. That upset Dominic and before long, mom was begging us to return. So we canceled our dinner reservation at El Meson de Pepe and headed back. Then we canceled the sunset cruise too. Boo. But really that was the only thorn of behavior in the whole week.

Southernmost Point

Our last full day! I went out and got donuts for everyone from Glazed Donuts, just a couple blocks from our condo. I had purchased tickets to enter the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory on Sunday but we ended up getting there too late to go through it. We could only do the Flamingle Experience. So Clarissa told me to come back later in the week to take as much time as we wanted to look at the butterflies. Only Dominic and Cole wanted to come so the three of us took a taxi over there (we decided to return the golf cart because there in NO free parking anywhere on the island and it was cheaper to take taxis) Wednesday late morning. By the time we arrived, the line was out the door and down the street to enter. So we wandered over one block, looked at the ocean, wandered down another block and waited in a 25-minute line to see the Southernmost Point. We asked a family behind us to get a photo. I really wanted mom with me for this picture because she has one of her here in this spot back in the 80s when she visited Ron. Oh well. It was just too hot.

After this photo op, the boys and I went through the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory again. It was just as magical as I remembered. Butterflies fluttering around everywhere. We made it back to the condo, made some lunch, then had naps. For our last night in town, we talked everyone in going out to eat at First Flight Brewery. Wow, that food was soooo good! The drinks, the service, the ambiance… everything was perfect. It used to be the headquarters for PanAm! The kids even had a good time! We sent mom and the kids back after dinner, then Curtis and I had a cocktail at Mangoes followed by a drag show at Aquaplex. So so so fun!!! We then went bar hopping until 2 am, hitting up Willie Ts, Rick’s Bar, and The Bull and Whistle Bar which had a clothing optional bar on top! We even visited the Garden of Eden (though there was only one lone naked guy up there).

Last Nap of Vacation

We all slept in super late on Thursday and spent a lazy morning playing on our devices. We showered and started packing after lunch then had about an hour before we headed to the airport. Anna wanted to lay down so she and mom went into the master for a quick nap. None of us had any interest in wandering around and getting soaked with sweat so we just stayed in the condo and chilled. Overall it was a wonderful vacation for me and Curtis, I’m not sure everyone else had a lot of fun but I’m glad we got them out of the house and out into the real world for a while. The Key West airport was a nightmare, a huge open space that overwhelmed me. I can’t imagine how Anna felt! Our plane was about 30 minutes late getting boarded but they made up most of that time in the air. No problems at DFW and we were home on time. We dropped off Cole and got home about 11 pm. The dogs were so happy to see us! Anna is already talking about her next trip… yep she’s stuck on airplanes again! At least this obsession is familiar. 😉
