First Day of Work

Dominic officially started his first day of gainful employment at Burger King on Saturday! His first shift was from 12-4 and he texted me part way through his day to let me know that it was going great. They have to order his uniform so he was instructed to wear all black until it came in. He met some of his team and really liked everybody, started learning the register, and mainly did fries, onion rings, drinks, bagged food, and cleaned. The AC was broken for half of his shift so he got hot and his feet got sore quickly but when I picked him up at 4, he was all smiles and let me take his picture. I’m a proud mom! We stopped at Walgreen’s on the way home and got some heavy duty work inserts for his shoes to go over his orthotics. Dominic worked from 10-5 on Sunday and no more sore feet!

Day 73, March 14th, 2021

Surprise from Dak Prescott

Late Sunday afternoon, I got a text from Ms. Deanna, Anna’s job coach at Life Bridges. She asked if we were home and if she and her husband could drop off a little surprise for Anna in about 20 minutes. I was just finishing up my hour on the treadmill and told her to come on over. Anna was still in her nightgown (we had no where we had to be on Sunday) so it was a good impetus to get Anna dressed. We met Deanna and her husband, David, in the driveway. Remember how Anna had written a Get Well Soon letter to Dak Prescott in October after he broke his ankle? It got returned in December saying No Known Address even though I got the address from the fan mail site online. Well Deanna’s husband is connected… like really connected… and Anna got a box from the Dallas Cowboys! See the mini helmet she’s holding? It’s autographed by Dak himself, saying “To Anna” on one side and has Dak’s signature on the other with the word Faith under his name. OMG!

We Love the Clarks!

Also in the box were some Dallas Cowboys goodies including a toothbrush, a notebook, some temporary tattoos, and a little teddy bear. Anna was so gobsmacked she didn’t even know what to say! The autographed Dak Prescott helmet is now sitting on Anna’s new bookcase in her room under her Dak calendar. I need to have Anna wear her Dak jersey and snap a photo to send to Dak to say thank you! A very special thank you goes to Deanna and David, we adore them… they are good humans. David, thank you for using your connections to reach out to Dak… and Deanna, thank you for loving Anna so much to make this special gift come to fruition for her. We love you guys!!!

Anna’s Haircut with Heather

Now that we are vaccinated, it feels safe to return to regular errands, self-care, and grooming. I attempted to cut Anna’s hair once last summer and it turned out okay but it was getting so long that it was tangled all the time and hot. Finally we got to return to Studio 1063 to see Heather Hudson. We first met Heather when she was working for a boutique salon in town then she decided to go solo a few years ago. She’s always been super sweet to Anna and regularly gets her little presents. It was so nice to see her again (actually I got my hair cut last week too!) and Anna picked up where she left off, chattering away about her upcoming trip to Key West and airplanes. I was super impressed with her Covid-19 protocol, everyone masked, everything Lysoled, everything clean. No other people in the salon, just us. Well done! Thank you so much, Heather!

Roadrunner on the Roof

We were sitting around in the living room and heard a sound that we swore was an owl. An owl in the middle of the day? We went outside to investigate because it sounded so loud and forlorn. It took us a minute to find the source of the hooting, but then we saw a large bird on our roof. Mom went to get her binoculars but I was pretty sure it was a roadrunner based on how long the tail was and how big he was. Sure enough, it was a roadrunner. I looked up roadrunner sounds and it turns out that he was hooting a mating call! If you watch my 1SE video project for March at the beginning of April, you’ll see and hear him in action.

First Pedi in a Year

Aaaaahhhh, is there nothing more indulgent than a pedicure? Why do we put ourselves last, fellow moms? This is the first thing I should’ve done once I had my vaccine. My first pedicure (and manicure) in over a year felt amazing. I always get I’m Not Really a Waitress OPI red shellac for my toes, always. Anytime I stray away from the classic red, I end up not liking it. For my fingernails, I’ll vary it but usually do something pale pink or sheer white for the spring and glitter black for the winter. I always schedule with Tracy at Renaissance Nail Spa on 306. I love Tracy. She always does an amazing job, my nails look great for at least a month. Thank you so much, Tracy!

Day 77, March 18th, 2021

BP at PT

It’s been a super chill spring break this week. We got a lot of stuff done but didn’t have a lot we had to do. It was nice to see Dr. Katie at 1:30 instead of 3:30 for Anna’s PT at Texas Physical Therapy Specialists, it wasn’t nearly as busy. We met a new guy, Dr. Joe, who took Anna’s blood pressure. Anna wanted me to come in and watch her work with Dr. Katie, she was passing the giant ball back and forth while laying on her back and she did kettle bell sit downs and stand ups with a 15 pound weight. Dr. Katie said Anna was really working hard, she liked showing off for me!

Day 77, March 18th, 2021

Waiting at the Vet

It was time for the dogs’ annual check-ups at CanyonVet Canyon Lake with Dr. Leakey. Even though it’s a lot of work to take all three dogs in at once, it’s nice to get them all done at the same time. CanyonVet has the most stringent Covid-19 protocols I’ve seen anywhere. When you arrive, you call them to let them know you’re there. They check you in over the phone, verifying what services you want. Then a vet tech comes to the car to bring the dogs inside. We wait in the car the whole time. We pay over the phone and they bring them back out. Charlie, Lola, and Stuart all got clean bills of health, got their vaccinations, and their heart worm preventative. The only thing I forgot was the nail trims. Ugh. Not sure what to do about that, I hate doing it myself because I’m worried I’ll hit the quick. Poor Charlie is almost totally blind now, his cataracts combined with his degenerative retinopathy means he can’t really see much at all especially at night. Dr. Leakey came out to the car and chatted with Anna about all of her current interests… he always lets her come into the clinic and see the animals but couldn’t this visit. He promised next time she could. He’s a sweetheart.

This is a terrible photo, Charlie’s not in focus and Lola is blown (the sun was super bright) and my hair, ugh (but you can see how much I chopped off)… but it captured the chaos! Would you believe we had to bathe Stuart twice before we came in? Dominic did the first bath then that stinker of a dog went out and rolled in the sand pit while he was wet so I had to give him bathe number two. Little butthead!
