First Day of School 2019-2020

Today is the first day of school for my kiddos for the 2019-2020 school year!

Anna’s Last First Day

Anna is 18 years old and is a senior at Canyon Lake High School. She is so excited to be starting her senior year. Because she repeated kindergarten, Anna only needs a few credits to graduate. (Shhh, don’t tell her, but she will actually qualify for graduation in December! But we will have her walk the stage with her peers next spring.) As a result, Anna doesn’t need any electives to finish her credits, so she gets a shortened school day this semester. She was SO happy to discover this yesterday and was all smiles this morning getting on the bus. She was home by 2:00 p.m. this afternoon and had an amazing first day. Her teacher said that she spent the entire day in the special ed classroom, something she has not been able to do in nearly two years. We are so happy! Way to go, Anna!

Sassy Senior

Anna is excited to finish up with school and start Life Bridges. She hopes to see her friends, Mila and Chloe there who graduated this past year. We finally found a good medication to help her with her behavior… it took a lot of trial and error and quite a few broken glasses but Invega is a magical medicine for her. She is in control of her emotions and behavior and feels better about herself. Anna has lost 18 pounds because I’ve been doing Weight Watchers (the whole family has benefitted!). Go Anna!!! Isn’t that smile infectious?

Dominic’s 1st Day of 10th Grade

Dominic is 15 years old and is a sophomore at Memorial Early College High School. He will be taking his first dual credit classes this semester. He got braces in early August so we get a real smile for the first time in years! He’s 5’11” and isn’t finished growing. It looks like he’s inherited Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome from me and has some knee issues already but he did some physical therapy this summer and got orthotics so we are hoping to avoid surgery. Dominic held several pool parties for his friends over the summer and has maintained a great group of core friendships.

Stylish Sophomore

Dominic should be finishing his Eagle Scout project this fall and will start driver’s ed after that. He is rocking his academics and behavior. If you met him now, you would never guess he struggled so much with ADHD and depression. He still has to manage those issues, but he handles his problems with grace and maturity. We are so proud of him.

Hello Deer

You may have seen a few deer in the background of the kids’ first day of school photos. We have a herd that beds down in our yard and has grown quite tame. They are happy school is back in session because they like to visit our driveway in the morning for a handful of deer nutrition.

Sweet Bambi

We had 7 grown deer and 7 baby deer in our yard this morning. This little one isn’t scared of us at all. I’m sure she will be coming back year after year with her own babies some day.
