Today, Tuesday, August 28th, 2018, is the first day of school for Comal ISD. Dominic (my baby!) is starting high school and Anna is a junior. They are almost grown up!
First Day of 9th Grade
Dominic is in 9th grade and got accepted into the Memorial Early College High School here in New Braunfels. It is a dual-credit high school where he earns college credit through St. Phillip’s College and will graduate high school with his associate’s degree in college. It’s a rigorous academic program and one in which he had to interview in order to be accepted. His school environment is about teamwork and project-based learning, and his class has only 110 kids in it… I think he will thrive here. He just got home from a week away at Space Academy (separate blog to follow soon!) in Huntsville, Alabama. Dominic is now 5’10” and has become a confident, self-possessed, and independent young man.

First Day of 11th Grade
Anna is in 11th grade returning to Canyon Lake High School. She will remain in a solo self-contained classroom with an aide though her main teacher has changed, so perhaps they will try to integrate her back into her special education classroom soon depending on her behavior. The bus route times are more reasonable this year so she will attempt to ride the bus to and from school most days. Her summer ESY (extended school year) program was a huge success and she did well with our summer respite caregiver. We’ve found a young woman in the neighborhood that just graduated from college with her degree in special education and she is working with Anna a couple of times a week. We are beginning transition planning to focus on life after high school and we’ve started the legal guardianship process. Mostly, she’s doing well but her anxiety and OCD make behavior issues a barrier to being employable or semi-independent at least for the near future. Anna has finished growing and 5’4″ and has been medically stable.

We had a ton of summer adventures and though I haven’t been blogging, I have been taking a few pictures here and there. I’m hoping now that the kids are back in school I will have time to start blogging again soon. Happy First Day of School!!! Thanks for looking!
