366 in 52 [2016] ~ Week Thirty-Nine

I’m so glad there was no school last Friday, we all needed a break. Thursday night we went to the Comal County Fair, so I’m sharing some photos I took there. Anna did pretty good walking around, but mom took her home after about an hour. Dominic met up with his friend Colby so we walked around with Colby’s parents, Nancy and Jerry. Jerry is also a photographer, so we had fun talking about gear and getting night-time carnival shots. Colby entered a photo in the fair and won a tri-color ribbon and got best in show, it was an awesome HDR shot of a local restaurant. Friday morning we got up early and went to San Antonio for Anna’s eye exam. Turns out her prescription has changed and her current glasses were made incorrectly… no wonder the poor girl has been having headaches. We then had lunch, then we went to Dominic’s counseling appointment at Clarity. Anna stayed in the session with us for that appointment. We were counseled to be very careful what we discuss in front of Dominic, he is picking up more than we realize and he is very tuned into Anna. We talked about private school, homeschool, and everything in between… Dominic is having a hard time fitting into the public education model. Saturday Dominic spent the night at Colby’s house while Curtis and I went to Johnson City to see my two images, Lost in My Head and Love Transcends Species in the juried show, Emotion, at the A. Smith Gallery. Sunday, Dominic spent all day at Colby’s with Cole playing Dungeons and Dragons, while Curtis and I took Anna back to San Antonio to get her orthotics replaced. Monday and Tuesday were decent days for the kids at school… only one missing assignment for Dominic and no calls home for Anna. Wednesday Curtis had to go to Plano, then Minneapolis, and wouldn’t you know… Anna has had two pretty horrible days. I don’t know if it’s related to Curtis traveling, but the timing is suspect. I’m going to share Thursday through Wednesday this week instead of Friday through Thursday. I don’t think anyone cares but me that I’m changing the days!

Day 266 ~ Empty Midway

Thursday is definitely the day to visit the Comal County Fair! It was not crowded at all and being there in the evening means it’s not as hot. I was super surprised by how empty the midway was and got this great shot of the carnies lined up waiting on people. Love this couple in the middle too.

Day 266 ~ Kids Win Everytime!

We finally talked Anna into trying to throw darts at the balloons, but she just wanted to watch Dominic do it. He popped a couple of balloons and Colby and Anna gathered around while he chose which stuffed animal to get.

Day 266 ~ Choices Choices

Dominic graciously allowed Anna to help him chose a stuffed animal. I think they agreed on a sock monkey, but I love Anna’s face here as she contemplates all of the choices.

Day 266 ~ Psychedelic Ferris Wheel

I’m so glad I brought my tripod so I could get some slow shutter speed shots of the rides. The ferris wheel is always my favorite because of all the different colors it produces. I had another shot that was a favorite that made it look like a peppermint candy, but this one with all the colors of the rainbow was the winner.

Day 266 ~ Ride Row

Looking down the row of colorful rides, you can see the sparse crowd and pretty neon lights. Can you remember being a kid and going to the carnival? There is so much excitement and anticipation. Too bad my kids don’t like rides!

Day 266 ~ The Orbiter

This ride reminds me a little bit of the Scrambler and the Tilt-a-Whirl combined into one. I love love love the colors in this long exposure! In one of the shots, a guy tried to photobomb me, it was so funny. I approached him afterward and he was so embarrassed but I told him it didn’t matter because of the long shutter speed… he was just a blur in the foreground. LOL.

Day 266 ~ Cliff Hanger

This ride is great for long exposure shots. Round and round, it spins on an angle. I had to wait a while before I could get a clean shot of the ride’s name with no one in front of it.

Day 266 ~ Paratrooper

There was literally no one waiting for this ride so the riders got an extra long ride. This is another ride that has lots of different colors, but I liked the red shot the best because of the man walking in front who is wearing a red shirt.

Day 267 ~ Therapy Siblings

I am really liking Dominic’s new counselor at the Clarity Child Guidance Center! Her name is Elva Barnett and she asked if Anna could come to Dominic’s next appointment. She was very respectful and quiet during the session and both kids talked about how hard school is this year for them. They also both shared that they can feel when the other one is having a hard day and it makes it hard for them too. I love that they are connected but wish they could both be happy kids, they both have such difficult challenges.

Day 268 ~ Juried Emotion

Here I am with one of my two images that was accepted into the juried art show, Emotion, at the A Smith Gallery. The juror was Karen Divine and we got to hear what moved her and why she chose these particular images. This one is called Love Transcends Species and features Cooper cuddling up to Curtis’s chin. This is my third time hanging into this gallery and I just adore Amanda, the curator. She is very warm and kind.

Day 269 ~ Stormy Sky

Sunday on our way back from getting Anna’s new orthotics in San Antonio at Ideal Feet, the skies opened up and poured. We were almost to Colby’s house to pick up Dominic and I just had to pull over on FM 1102. The clouds were so dramatic and menacing in the distance that I just couldn’t stop looking at them. No one was out but I did pull way off to the side and make sure it was safe before shooting.

Day 270 ~ Ice Blooms in the Sun

This is small succulent plant that we re-potted after Jenny’s wedding over two years ago. Every once in a while it will bloom. Mom says it’s called an Ice plant. It’s a very tiny and delicate blossom. The kids had just gone to school and I was sitting out back watching the deer. The sun hit the pink flower and said good morning to me.

Day 271 ~ After School Cuddles

Anna got home from school on Tuesday earlier than usual. I complained to the district head of special ed that Anna gets home too late and they are working on changing the route. Charlie and Curtis were resting and Anna and Stuart decided to join them. Stuart looks quite possessive of Anna here, doesn’t he?

Day 271 ~ Piggie Pen Time

Dominic got Domino a pen so that he could take him outside to run around safely. Domino wasn’t sure about being outside, he seemed a little overwhelmed by all the space. Dominic put a little wooden hut so Domino could hide but he just chilled in the grass.

Day 272 ~ Broken Perfection

Yesterday morning was crisp and cool so I sat outside with my mom for my second cup of coffee. I spied this gorgeous web glinting in the sunshine and immediately ran inside to grab my camera. My new friend, Jerry (Colby’s dad), has invited me to join the New Braunfels Photographic Society where they have monthly themes. The theme for October is “Broken” and I saw the two spots in the web that were torn and thought this image might work for the theme. I like that the image you submit has to be within the last 90 days… it will force me to think about each theme and shoot something new.

Day 272 ~ Glimmering in the Sun

I couldn’t decide if I liked the close-up shot of the web more or the pulled back shot… so I thought I would share both! Webs are one of nature’s most beautiful creations. I love how the strands glimmer in the sun and seem to connect to nothing but thin air.

Even though the past two days have been very rough for Anna, overall the week was better. Today we had an ARD for Dominic to add in-school counseling services and we should be having an ARD for Anna soon to talk about getting her a 1-1 aide. Each day is a new opportunity to start over, that’s what I keep reminding the kids. Thanks for looking and for all of the support everyone has been giving us. Tomorrow is a new day. <3
